Certified instructor description: Two short-but-effective workouts that maximize results by combining dumbbells with higher-impact "mini bursts." Each program has a different goal and style. One workout is pure fat-burning cardio. Taught add-on-style, it's a mix of higher and lower-impact combinations (often intensified with dumbbells). But, interspersed within these combos are the mini-bursts — plyometric flying jacks and vertical leaps (“I want air under your feet!”). The other program also includes the mini-bursts. But it combines the aerobics with multi-muscle toning — well-sequenced intervals of complementary exercises (e.g. a front lunge, low row, rear leg-extension series). Straight-forward cuing by Emily Welsh and Alison Davis McLean. Requires two sets of dumbbells (e.g. 3 and 5 lb.). ©2010. Note: The workouts in this video are part of the 13-DVD Firm Express Get Thin in 30 kit. DVD has: Wide screen.

The Firm: TurboCharge Weight Loss

Love 20 minute workouts!
I've been working out consistently for the last 21 years. As I've gotten older, I'm less interested in working out for extended periods and more invested in getting a good workout in a short amount of time. Let's face it, I'm not performing scantily clad in front of thousands like Madonna. For that reason I love the 2nd workout on this DVD. I can easily follow the choreography, I like how the instructor cues and she gets my heart pumping early on and keeps it there until the end of the workout. This particular workout is more focused on total-body aerobics which I appreciate as I attempt to stave off heart disease, diabetes and arthritis which all run in my family. I like the 1st workout as well, but I find myself gravitating to workout 2. I would definitely recommend this DVD. - posted by Laura on 4/27/2012
OK, like Alison's segment
I think Alison is the best instructor the Firm has now. This is an OK workout DVD overall. I like Alison's instruction and her part of the video. It's not her best workout, but it's good enough and a challenge. I like the personality of the other instructor too, but not her segment on this. I think the Firm got this 20-minute segment series wrong in execution. The formats are too rushed and not enjoyable to do time after time and the music is just so-so. Someone who does a short, intense workout better is Jillian. Her style is harsh and not my favorite, but you'll get a better workout in a short time without seeming rushed. - posted by Robin K on 4/5/2012

WOW!!!!
I love this video!!! since the first day that i popped it into the dvd player and worked out, i knew that it was awesome- i sweat so much in the 20 minutes that each segment takes and i feel so good afterward. i have been using the workout for the last 4 weeks and i am not bored, and i still sweat a whole lot!!! i can see the transformation of my body, and that really keeps me going. I find that this workout challenges me so that when i get out on the weekend to run, i am training myself to do a 5k, i have the stamina to push myself a little more each time. this workout keeps my body challenged so that i can continue to run. I am truly enjoying this video and anyone who is pressed for time will find it beneficial. What is so great about the 2 workouts is that you work each body part and you get the 8 second turbo challenge (whew!!). I can actually feel the difference in the tone of my body. I feel great afterwards, and i look forward to doing the workout the next morning. all i can say is, thank you the firm, for thinking of me, and countless others, by creating a truly challenging and sweat inducing workout in 20 minutes. - posted by Luz on 2/19/2012
Quick & Effective
This DVD contains 2 - 20 minute workouts. One is strength training with bursts of cardio, and the other is all cardio. It is PERFECT for days when 20 minutes is all we have! Moves are not complex and one needs only weights - no fancy equipment. Love it. - posted by Darci on 12/8/2011
WOULD GIVE 0 STARS IF I COULD
Just didn't like this at all. Way too fast, no way to do any proper form and like someone else said, it seems just when you get to a burst, it's over. You don't need a too short workout that goes rapid fire fast with bad form to get a great workout. There are so many other far superior out there. I donated this one to Goodwill. Skip this. Get Amy Dixon's Breathless Body. THAT is a great workout! - posted by JILL on 11/9/2011
Not a fan
Sorry, usually The Firm can do no wrong, but this one was not their best. As soon as they would start their big burst they would stop. The movements were so fast as well, too fast to really get into it. I was frustrated. Alison is my favorite instructor too- :( My sister didn't like it either, so I don't know just not the greatest. - posted by Tommi on 11/3/2011
Wasn't the worst but will return
I had gone back and forth about buying this workout because of the poor reviews and the short length of the workouts. I should have listened to my gut- first of all the moves are very quick and hard to follow. Second- my heartrate just didn't get up there- it was not worth my time. (I did both workouts back to back.) I wish I could get a great workout in 20 minutes, but it just ain't happening. I will be returning this workout. - posted by Joanne on 10/27/2011
Want My Money Back!
I tend to buy the same videos from the same instructors (Bob Harper, Jillian Michaels, Jackie Warner, Billy Blanks) because I know their style and I know what to expect. I know that I will get a killer workout every time and the moves will be challenging. This video just left me wishing that I never bought it. First off, the one instructor looks completely fake (is she wearing a wig??) The instruction and timing was poor. If you want a really good workout you have to do both 20 minute workouts, which I did. The cardio segments were okay, I did like the 8 second cardio bursts but wish there was more. - posted by Lisa on 10/27/2011
This workout makes me feel 49 years old!
Unfortunately I'm only 45...in the time it took me to write this you would have already completed one entire workout in this 2 workout disc. These originally were released in the "The FIRM Express Get Thin in 30" informercial set. Emily's is a "Sculpt" and Alison's is a "Cardio". Each session is only 20 minutes. I heard tales there was a modifier in each cast, but am hard pressed to name her (since no one was modifying). I felt 49 years old because everything moves Verrrrrry quickly. I could not obtain full range of motion in the sculpting moves, and some moves seem overly-fussy with no payoff. Doing compound moves meant you can't use heavy enough weight for lower body, as it would be too heavy for upper body. The "new science" bursts are about 8 seconds, and aren't too taxing, except when the instructors keep you climbing down onto the floor and back up again. They seem fond of these kinds of moves. Too fond. Alison's is described as kettlebell-style, so I used a kettlebell. Each ends with a very short (surprise)ab segment and stretch. I like the new bright decor' of the stage, but the music was very much background filler. Yes there was some "whooo"ing in these. You have been warned. I own more than 100 The FIRM dvds and videos going back to the orginal Volume 1, so I may just be having a hard time adjusting to this new generation of FIRM's. Frankly, these just made me feel older. I also have Ignite Calorie Burn from the same Express system, and would be hard pressed to tell you the difference between them. I am an advanced exerciser and enjoy staying agile and strong with my dvd's working out 15-20 days a month. Hope this helps y'all! - posted by Julie aka Firmaniac on 10/17/2011

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Aerobics choreography

Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
