Certified instructor description: A no-nonsense aero/tone program that uses dumbbells — an updated version of the original “The Firm” videos. This time-efficient format is specially designed to burn fat as it reshapes your body. Each of the four segments can be done as a separate workout. One segment is pure kickbox cardio. The others feature the traditional Firm format: aerobics blended — or alternated with — dumbbell toning. While the format is classic, many of the moves have been modernized with creative modifications or options (e.g. instead of a plain lunge, you get a “power cross-country ski;” instead of plain jump, you get a trampoline-style, full tuck jump). Superbly led by Alison McLain. Requires 2 to 10 lb. dumbbells. ©2010. DVD has: Programmable chapters, Wide screen.

The Firm: Calorie Explosion

Calorie explosion
Have always loved The Firm work out videos, and the instructor, Alison Davis, in particular. She is the reason I bought this video. I must say this video is extremely challenging, and I have been a "Firm believer" for over 10 yrs! A little too tough on my knees. Easy to get winded early on. But I feel it will make a difference in my body because it is so hard. Have yet to finish it because it's tough. But I plan on doing so one of these days! - posted by Melissa on 4/21/2012
Great Cardio Workout
This workout definitely is a great cardio workout, although I have only done it twice so far. I have been exercising to The Firm videos since 1978. I own SEVERAL (and most of them are on VHS). It is an interesting cardio workout for those days that I am not doing any heavy lifting. - posted by Robyn on 4/19/2012

Good workout but I wish they would incorporate more ab exercises. - posted by cindi on 4/19/2012
Great way to fit exercise into a busy day
I have completed 3 of the 4 segments thus far. The cuing is excellent, and I have always enjoyed Alison Davis-McLain as an instructor. This has been my go-to video when I am pressed for time and want to get some exercise in on a busy day--I feel like I'm burning calories and getting my body moving in a positive way. The Cardio Kickboxing segment has been my favorite (It does not incorporate weights). My only caveat: each segment is quick-paced, which makes me concerned about my overall form when performing moves with weights. I did experience soreness in my knees after one workout, which is not a huge problem if I'm only completing one segment. However, completing multiple segments could cause a more significant strain. Therefore, I would caution against completing the entire workout with heavy weights until one becomes accustomed to the moves and pacing. I fully expect that with practice my form will improve, and that I should be able to complete the workout with heavy weights (I have 6 and 10 lb.weights)without straining my knees. About me: I'm a 31-year-old mother of 4--aged 5 and under, and would consider myself an intermediate exerciser. I enjoy Pilates, Jillian Michaels (particularly--Trouble Zones, Yoga Meltdown, Boost Metabolism, and 30 DS), exercise bike, and BOSU. - posted by Michelle on 4/12/2012
Excellent workout!
This DVD gives you 57 minutes of high intensity interval training. I loved it, even though the first couple of times I did it it was hard! I like that you can choose to do all 4 segments or mix and match, depending on how much time you have to exercise. I haven't tried a workout with Allison as the instructor that I have not enjoyed. - posted by Tina on 4/5/2012
Great Workout
This video is a great work out! Each section gets more intense as you go. I would say the last section is very intense, but the others are moderate. Definitely gets your heart rate up and works most of the muscle groups. My favorite part is the kickboxing! But all in all its a good work out video for my slow day! my other video is majorly intense! I have only done the video a handful of times but i will write another review when i start seeing some results! - posted by Liz on 2/24/2012
Great Workout !
This is a tough workout, love every minute of it. I have been looking for a hard working advanced video and I have finally found one. I love to run when the weather cooperates, when it doesn't I do videos and this one is a great workout! Thanks to the The Firm I am a true believer in you! - posted by Denise on 2/2/2012
Great addition to my collection
I hadn't ordered a Firm DVD in a while and, frankly, the older ones were getting easy (because I was used to them). I'm so glad I ordered this one. I typically work in the full workout once a week with light weights and burn about 700 calories in the end (I'm 6'3", 195). It's a nice challenge with a good variety of moves so the full workout goes by quickly. I definitely recommend this one! - posted by Christi on 2/2/2012
Love it....great workout!
This is an awesome workout and the price cannot be beat (got it on sale!). You will definitely sweat if you put in the effort. - posted by Vicky on 12/22/2011
Started seeing results in the first 3 workouts
This is challenging. It was my fourth or fifth time using the DVD before I could get through the whole thing. My obliques and butt were noticeably tighter within 3 workouts. The only thing I'm not crazy about is workout four. I feel like doing compound strength moves that fast is very risky, and it would be easy to injure yourself trying to keep up with the instructors. - posted by Colleen on 11/27/2011

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Programmable chapters
X
At the beginning of your workout, you can select the exact segments you want to play that day. The DVD will then play all those segments in the order you chose.
Wide screen
X
The program fully fills a wide-screen television screen. Note: These videos will display black bars at the top and bottom on a traditional 4 x 3 ratio TV screen.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Floor aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
