Certified instructor description: Beautifully filmed at White Sands National Monument, it’s a very “new age” approach to mind-body fitness. You get a fluid blend of yoga, rhythmic movements, free-form dance, meditation, conscious breathing and spirituality. Shiva also interweaves a variety of new age terminology and concepts like vinyasas, energy flows and mind/body/universe connections (e.g. “allow your spine to become the river," “chant ’om’ from your heart,” “move like a cat”). The DVD has sixteen different segments that can be played individually or done in one of six pre-set practices (each segment is 3 to 11-minutes long; each practice is 28 to 41-minutes long). Shiva’s motions are creative and beautiful to watch, but she often only provides very limited “cuing.” Soundtrack includes a variety of drum, oriental and chant-like music. DVD has a yoga documentary. Also includes a 12-page booklet. ©2006. DVD has: 6 premixes (28 to 41-min. alternate workouts), Programmable chapters, Music only option, Wide screen, Region 1.

Shiva Rea's Yoga Trance Dance

Fun!
Really fun! Doesn't feel like a workout at all. I don't have much space in my apartment though, so dancing for a few minutes in a cramped area will sometimes give me a headache and make me feel dizzy. It really feels like I'm doing a yoga trance dance though! - posted by Ilona on 12/20/2011
gets you moving!
I'm a big Shiva Rea fan and love the options on this video! It includes traditional portions mixed with very open flow, creative dance time. You can pick & choose. Visually & musically gets you going. You'll be dancing around your room before you know it! I've even left it running on music only when cleaning around the house. - posted by Regina on 12/23/2010
tension tamer
I am not a dancer. I have no rhythm. I close the blinds and let go.. my whole body gets loose and I feel renewed. A truly stunning video and unlike any other. To the review about Shiva talking there is a music only option. I need her cuing and her voice is like music melodic and guiding. It is a creative dance you move as you feel led by the music. If you want choreographed moves you wont like this. - posted by Holly on 1/2/2010
so much fun!
I am a dancer, and I regularly dance around my house just for fun anyway, so this dvd was right up my alley. I like that she gives you just enough direction to guide your movements when you don't feel creative or to help you explore avenues you wouldn't usually choose, and if you don't like her talking so much I'm pretty sure you can choose "music only" from the main menu, because you can do that in her other videos. Anyway, it's so much fun! - posted by annie g on 6/10/2009
Less Talk, Please
As a big fan of ecstatic (trance) dance, I was hoping to like this program more than I did. First some of the pluses - I was glad there was more dance than yoga, as dance is what I was looking for. The outdoor White Sands location is undeniably beautiful. And nothing liberates the soul more than freedom in movement like what you get when you do ecstatic dance. So why was I disappointed? Because in order to really "let go" and connect to your soul which is what this type of dance is all about, the person leading you should not be talking nonstop as though it's a regular workout (it's not!). The trouble with all the talk is that having to listen to the nonstop verbiage keeps you stuck in left brain mode, when the whole point is to let go of that and go into "the zone". Still, die-hard Shiva fans may like this one, regardless. - posted by Chris on 6/28/2008
much more dance than yoga
I love Shiva Rea. That said, Yoga Trance Dance is definately a different animal. I felt it was very short on actual yoga and I have found that I have used it only a few times and that because I felt guilty for the money I spent on it. I would strongly suggest that anyone considering purchasing this dvd based on their love of previous Shiva Rea yoga purchases be prepared for something different. - posted by Isabella on 1/3/2008

Best feel good workout!
This is my all time favorite workout, and I have over 200! I reach for it anytime I want to feel good or increase my energy. Not only it is fun and beautiful to watch, it is relaxing depending on what segments you choose. - posted by Sandra on 11/1/2007
This Is SO Much Fun
WOW! I absolutely love this DVD! What a marvelous way to "dance" your stress away! And I love her infamous line, "Those who dance are seen to be crazy by those who do not hear the drums. So enjoy your crazy wisdom." - posted by Taffi on 8/22/2007
Liberating
This is unlike anything out there. I have done aerobics for decades and burned out due to the repetition of movements. I began doing yoga 2 years ago which transformed my body completely. At times though I struggled with not feeling like I was aerobically working out. This is the answer. The free form dance is just what I was looking for, you let go, feel the beat, and there are no moves to follow, just your own path. It gets your "inner fire" burning! My kids also love it. The music adds to the trance factor. It is meditative in its rhythm. Again there is a matix so you can pick what you workout you want. Shiva Rea is amazing, her connection to yoga and to the soul is enviable. She is beautiful to watch. Love it! - posted by trish on 7/24/2007

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Premixes
X
These are alternate workouts created by the manufacturer. They use the same content as the main program (i.e. the very same video footage). But the sections are re-edited into pre-made alternative workouts that you select from a menu. These are often condensed versions of the main workout.
Programmable chapters
X
At the beginning of your workout, you can select the exact segments you want to play that day. The DVD will then play all those segments in the order you chose.
Music only option
X
This feature allows you to play only the music, without any cuing (after you’ve learned the movements and you just want to do the workout without listening to the instruction).
Wide screen
X
The program fully fills a wide-screen television screen. Note: These videos will display black bars at the top and bottom on a traditional 4 x 3 ratio TV screen.
Region 1
X
This DVD is designed for US and Canadian DVD players. It will NOT play in most foreign country players.

Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).
