Certified instructor description: Nothing “watered down” here. This is a real, sweat-producing interval workout — alternating segments of aerobics and toning. What makes it seniors-specific? Jazzed-up Swing instrumental music. A slightly slower pace. No down-on-the-floor toning. And a strong, vigorous, white-haired instructor with a subtle sense of humor (“Let’s start with 1000 reps”). The cardio sections include all your favorites — grapevines and ball changes, jazz squares and mambos (often with optional small jumps and turns). The toning intervals use a chair and resistance tubing. These full range-of-motion routines will strengthen your muscles as they improve your balance. Requires an X-ertube. ©2006. DVD has: 3 premixes (6 to 30-min. alternate workouts), Chapter menus.

Senior Surge with Jeff Borden

Jeff Borden - Senior Surge
I watched a clip of the video and read the reviews before I purchased it. I liked what I saw. I have been exercising since I was in my teens. Leslie Sansone is one of my favorites. This is a very fast paced routine. Until you memorize all of the different moves - it can be difficult. Once you get to know the moves, it's great. I love the aerobic workout followed by strength training intervals. All senior citizens should be aware of the benefits of both types of activity. I am 66 and just love it. Thanks. - posted by Trudy on 4/20/2012
NOT FOR SENIORS!
Having taught fitness classes for 20+ years, I can honestly say this is NOT a video for most seniors. The patterns move too quickly--often only a single move done before moving on to the next move--my seniors need at least 4 counts of a move before moving on. Additionally, some of these moves are too difficult for most seniors--only the most active seniors who have plenty of rhythm would be able to follow this video. Notice--the 2 gals in the video are NOT seniors--this would be a good video for most young people (teens through 40's)who are used to aerobics moves already. - posted by Kathryn on 5/18/2010
Would not recommend for seniors
I was surprised that this was indicated for seniors. To me...and in this day and age, videos for seniors indicate people in the age bracket 70's-90's...I teach a number of senior classes, and the speed of the exercises and the number of changes would be extremely difficult for them to follow. The cueing is poor and the fact that he uses younger people in the background makes the video very suspect. - posted by Susan on 2/25/2010
Senior Surge with Jeff Borden AKA, Senior Surgery
I have over three hundred exercise videos in my library collection. I have been a loyal Collage customer for over 25 years. I am an extremely fit 52 year old. My preferred videos are by The Firm, Kathy Smith, Karen Voight and Charlene Prickett. Senior Surge with Jeff Borden is not only the most poorly cued routine that I have ever done, it is also the most dangerous. Mr. Borden often seems confused when he's flailing about shouting peppy grunts rather than advance cuing. Not once does he mention keeping your abs tight to protect your back while plunging through rushed and chaotic aerobic movements. He also assumes that everyone knows what the Charlie Chaplin and the Fred Astaire moves are? There is never a routine build up, just immediate non-cued spastically unbalanced aerobic movements. There are so many lateral moves that I'm surprised other customers haven't complained of ACL injuries. In regard to the tubing muscle resistance intervals, well let's see: if the customer has the perfect chair, these work. Bottom line: I found this to be a treacherous exercise routine. A final note, if this is supposed to be an exercise video for seniors, why are the two demonstrators under thirty? - posted by Rebecca Stoeckert on 9/27/2008
Rated highly by Group Execise Instructor
I run my own classes, so I'm very critical. This DVD is well choreographed, fun, inspirational, and highly beneficial. Jeff is my new idol. He doesn't just pretend to exercise, and he doesn't treat seniors like they are all 90 year old children - posted by Deana on 6/23/2008
Great for fit seniors
I have been exercising with this DVD for several weeks now. I like it very much. It is not easy, but I feel I get a really good workout every time. The cueing is great, the division into aerobic-toning sections, enables to reduce extra effort and Jeff is an inspiration. It is a total body workout that all relatively healthy seniors can do. I, personally don't like very much to use the tubing they are using during the program, but it works just as well, with hand held weights. It is enjoyable to work out with an energetic instructor from my age group, after all those young and perfect instructors. Thanks Jeff. - posted by Gila on 3/22/2008

Sounds like just what I've been waiting for!
I am ordering this one for sure. I've been waiting for a senior workout that is tough and not boring. I know of Jeff Borden's work and I know it's good. Can't wait!! Thank you for offering it. - posted by Janice on 12/31/2006
Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.
sample time graph
Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Premixes
X
These are alternate workouts created by the manufacturer. They use the same content as the main program (i.e. the very same video footage). But the sections are re-edited into pre-made alternative workouts that you select from a menu. These are often condensed versions of the main workout.
Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Specialty: Seniors
X
Workouts especially designed for older exercisers (e.g. featuring seniors participants or older music styles). They may include all three basic exercise types: aerobics, toning and stretch.
