Certified instructor description: This dumbbell-based program is all about building long, lean muscles. The exercises range from muscle-isolation moves to multi-muscle combos/sequences (often repeating a set with slight modifications to target the same muscle in a different way or from a different angle). The workout ends with a fast-paced, almost “cardio,” toning series. The bright, on-the-beach setting and common sense approach to exercise is both motivating and effective. The program ends with informative segments on exercise, fitness and healthy eating. Requires 2 to 5 lb. dumbbells. The DVDs include a 5-minute “bonus” workout. ©2005. DVD has: Chapter menus.

Great Workout
This is a great workout if you don't have a lot of time. Ellen Barrett is awesome to work out with. She's so positive and encouraging. I try to use this video at least once a week. I am 61 and find that she is one of my favorites. - posted by Patricia Devitt on 5/7/2012
53 and never giving in!!
Headed to the beach in 2 months with the girls and the work out is working!! I do like using the weights as well. Great for beginners. - posted by Debbie on 4/27/2012
A favorite short toning workout!
Ellen's cheerful personality and excellent cueing make this a fun and challenging workout. A modifier shows low impact moves that are better for my joints. Love the pretty beach scene -- it's an invigorating background for a workout. I especially appreciate the short bonus ab program that I can use any time. A+ - posted by Tanya on 2/22/2012
Good Value !
This is a basic, mostly upper body workout with weights. I got it on sale, and congratulate myself every time I do it! I am 66 and have no trouble finishing it, nice glow afterwards. Good one! - posted by Alice on 1/26/2012
Good weight-lifting video
While I have no intentions of donning a bikini any time soon, I'd been looking for another video to put in my "weights" rotation, and this one fills the bill. My only wish--a better and longer cool-down and/or stretch. - posted by Maggie on 12/22/2011
Great quick workout!
I love Ellen Barrett! This workout is great. It can be really simple with light weights and very difficult with heavy weights. If your body starts getting bored and it's too easy, just rev up the weights. It's great for days when you're limited on time. - posted by Ilona on 12/20/2011
not my favorite
I have several Ellen B workout dvds that I love, but not this one, will be sending it back... It has a weird flow to it. Not as intense as most of her other dvds. - posted by robin on 11/26/2011
Good workout
I like this dvd, although I don't expect to be able to wear a bikini. The workout is doable even for a 55 year old. I'm relatively active. I like to change up my workouts, this one is a good change. - posted by Nancy on 9/25/2011
Traditional and innovative
This is a short workout but it's an effective use of time. Although I am leery of magazine workout videos and any workout that promises to get me "bikini ready", I am an Ellen Barrett fan and was not disappointed. This is a great mix of traditional moves (bicep curls, upright rows) with innovative twists (releves, squatting lat pulls.) It's an excellent upper body workout followed by a shorter leg workout with some squat variations and balance moves. Included is a separate 5 minute Pilates segment which I recommend to get a full workout. The time on the DVD is a little misleading-there is ~8 minutes of Ellen talking at the end explaining the basics of diet and exercise. One exerciser demonstrates excellent low impact options during a brief plyometric segment. This isn't long enough for me to use for every weight workout (I'll still be using my Firm, Amy Dixon and Jackie Warner) but it's good to have in the mix and I really enjoy the beautiful ocean background and Ellen's always precise and pleasant instruction. - posted by Vanessa on 9/22/2011
Fast, fun
I'm a big fan of Ellen's and have all her Studio workouts on DVD. This one is precursor to those and has many similarities, but it's shorter and slightly (very slightly) more aerobic. It seems a bit heavy on upper body work for something that claims to get you in bikini shape fast, but I didn't buy it for that reason anyway, and the standing core work is great. It's fun and energizing, perfect for days when I don't have much time or want a little lighter workout than usual. - posted by Marsha on 9/15/2011

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
