Certified instructor description: A straight-forward toning/balance workout that focuses on range of motion and functional fitness — the moves you use in everyday activities. Cindy Kozacek and her baby-boomer-age class demonstrate a variety of modifications and intensities (one person is seated; another is doing a harder variation). After a fast-paced warm-up, you’ll move into a medley of mostly multiple-muscle-group exercises (e.g. a lower-body squat combined with an upright arm row). The exercises are all well-structured and carefully designed to avoid awkward between-move transitions. Requires 2 to 5 lb. dumbbells and an X-ertube. ©2005.

Challenging but not too difficult
As a 65-year-old who is moderately active, I found this video to be a good addition to my strengthening routine. - posted by Gretchen on 3/29/2012
Very Good Work Out for Anyone
I read several reviews before I purchased this one. I have been exercising for about 28 years and I have tried several videos over the years that I have enjoyed. I am to the age now to where I can't do alot of jumping and sit ups. I was looking for something to still give me a work out and keep me toned. I have found this video does it all. I have only used it for 3 weeks(not everyday) and I feel good, after the work out. I have purchased both Videos and enjoy them both, I have started to interchange between the two, I like the way Cindy explains the exercises, I like her personality on the video. - posted by Golda on 3/15/2012
A very pleasant workout for a beginner
Picking an exercise dvd for a complete beginner can be very confusing, but as a morbidly obese man, not yet 50, I knew that the more challenging videos were not for me. This one fulfilled my needs. In this case, this video has the instructor and two students, one to her right and one to her left. The student on her left, Murray, demonstrates the easiest level, Cindy, the instructor, demonstrates the average exercise level, and the student to her right, Joan, demonstrates the advanced movements. As a beginner, I learned some "buzz phrases" that are important to look for in a beginners dvds until a higher level of fitness is achieved. This one passes the test. The first "buzz phrase" is: No floor exercises. Let's face it, if you're really out of shape, any instructor who includes floor exercises within the first five minutes of their dvds will lose you very quickly. This exercise dvd contains none of these. The second buzz phrase is "exercises are done in real time". With alot of the clever editing available out there, some instructors try to fit more in their dvds and can lose their students working out at home. On this DVD, if the instructor has to take a moment to pick up her weights or put them down, so do you. The final "buzz phrase" is: contains a warm-up and cool-down. These can be perceived as a waste of time by some people, but they are not. These are very important and both are included in this video to minimize injury and/or complications. Stretch tubes and dumb bells are needed to do this workout. My stretch tubes were from a different manufacturer than those she used, but this variance didn't alter the workout much for me. All in all, a well-done video! - posted by CMP874 on 9/8/2011

Good Beginner DVD
I'm an obese 53 year old, and hadn't exercised more than a walk across my house for 5 years. This video was not too difficult at all for me, but was enough workout for me to get my heart rate up. A couple of caveats: if you have bad knees, this video has a couple of segments that might be too hard on them. I had to stand and watch those parts. Also, I tend to have arthritic type pains in my elbows, and the weights aggravate that more than the resistance bands. Other than that, the DVD is a good one for beginners. - posted by Val on 4/11/2011
Exactly what I Wanted
I wanted a strength training video that was geared toward older people. It uses dumbbells and stretch bands. This was just what I expected. - posted by Barbara on 2/27/2011
Total workout
I like Cindy's style of workout. She's easy to listen to and you get the job done. It's a little slower then I usually do but it's good for a total body workout. I'm 54 so it's easy on your body and good for you so you can't go wrong! - posted by Carla on 9/23/2010
Surprisingly good!
This video is surprisingly good and challenging for young and old alike. I purchased it because I wanted a beginning video for upper body arm work with dumbbells. (I made a mistake once of getting an advanced step aerobic tape that made me feel ridiculous since I had never done step aerobics before. I like what Cindy does with the resistance bands. She makes each piece of equipment count. I will definitely add her tape into my work out program. - posted by Marie on 7/23/2010
Safe and Strong
I have purchased both Safe and Fit and Safe and Strong. This dvd is also excellent. I am 69, enjoy walking and trying to stay in good health. Along with a good diet, (Mediterranean) exercise is so important to me. Cindy's workout is excellent and wanted one using dumbbells and rubber tubing. So very glad I purchased these dvds. - posted by Gail on 6/13/2010
Excellent
Good, all-round strengthening with emphasis on upper body. As others have said, it's very well-cued and Cindy gives full explanations about proper form as well as reminders to keep the abs engaged and stand tall. The video also includes a good warm-up (longer than on some videos) and a nice stretching segment at the end. A really good instructor and a really good work-out that can be easily adapted for exercisers at any level. - posted by Anna on 6/1/2010

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
