Certified instructor description: Non-stop 50’s and 60’s hit songs in four super-high-energy fat burners. These are the original 1988-1992 workouts that made Richard famous! The moves are easy — lots of arm motions, easy marches and basic dance steps (e.g. Twist, Pony, grapevines, cha chas). Volume One has a dance party setting; the songs include “Wipe Out,” “It’s My Party” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” Volume Two has a short muscle-toning segment; the songs include “Windy,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and “Jailhouse Rock.” Volume Three is a stylized amusement park (complete with flashing lights and a Ferris wheel). The songs include “Do You Wanna’ Dance,” “Louie, Louie” and “Born to Be Wild.” Volume Four mixes in some gospel music; the songs include “Someday We’ll Be Together,” “Proud Mary” and “Dance to the Music.” This set also has a fifth DVD — “Love Yourself and Win,” It’s features Richard’s “six steps to improved self-esteem and permanent weight loss” (plus bonus interviews with Richard, testimonials from successful weight losers and more). ©1988-1992. DVD has: Chapter menus.

Our exercise group of age 50+ enjoys this one. They can't always follow Richard's lead perfectly but they all keep moving! - posted by Margaret on 3/16/2012
The original fun workout!
The songs are great and the workouts are fun. Richard was and still is way ahead of his time. The settings are awesome too. I have an extensive dvd workout collection and I am amazed at how many instructors have used Richards ideas and tried to repackage them as their own. These are the original "make it fun" workouts set to music that makes you want to move. I also love the motivational dvd. These workouts are great for all levels; beginners can modify and advanced exercisers can make the moves bigger/higher. I highly recommend this. Definitely worth the money!!! Richards ideas are time-tested and they work!!! - posted by Joanie on 2/3/2012
When You Don't Want to Exercise Try Richard...
I love these Sweatin to the Oldies videos! On the days I really don't want to exercise these are the best. I love the music; I grew up on these songs. I feel like a kid again just dancing to American Band Stand or Soul Train. Some of the moves are so silly they'll make you smile, but seriously you'll sweat. Just close the curtains if you feel silly... I used to do them on VHS when I was younger, but decided to get more serious with other videos which now really hurt my knees. All the videos end with the participants doing a little dance solo with their names and how much weight they've lost...very inspirational! Richard is definitely part of my life. I used to do these to lose the weight I gained from having babies. It worked! Now I use them for menopause extra pounds and they're working again...Just great fun! Also love Sweatin to the Oldies 5! - posted by Barbara on 1/2/2012
Let's Dance !
I had some of Richard's workouts on VHS back in the 90's, but gave them away long ago. Recently, I bought a new DVD set. These are a blast! I'm over 50, so the music is what I grew up with. I didn't have any trouble following Richard. The steps are repeated in 4's..so you know it's going to change. When I lost my step, I would just dance around until I found it again. The hour flew by because it is such FUN! Dancing is a great way to burn fat. It lifts my spirit. If you like to dance, try these.... You'll be sweatin'! - posted by Melanie on 11/16/2011
Plain Fun!
My husband and I did these "tapes" back when they first hit the market. We enjoyed them then and we are enjoying them once again. Of course, I have moved on to other types of exercise DVDs over the years. The new craze for Zumba started and I thought "why get into that when I can return to the Oldies". So, that is what I did. They are as fun now and they were then. It's like listening to the radio when I was young and dancing to the music. Things do go full circle! I do these when I just don't want to exercise in the morning. They get me going and put a smile on my face. It does get the heart rate up and isn't hard on the knees. Go for it you won't be sorry to return to the fun once again!! - posted by Nancy on 8/18/2011

Great Workout!
I recently bought the Wii so I could get exercise with their dance videos. Boy, I wished I would have bought the Richard Simmons' DVD first. Lots more fun & cheaper! - posted by Liz on 7/20/2011
Dated , but great
Even though these disks are dated - from the 80s - the workouts are very effective, the music is fabulous, and the time flies by. Never boring. Love them. - posted by Jane on 6/2/2011

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Floor aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
