Certified instructor description: An immense variety of kickbox combos that progress from aerobics to aero/tone to pure toning. Susan Chung is a high-energy instructor who knows her stuff — her cuing is detailed and her sequencing is smooth. The first section features four all-cardio "rounds." They begin with a quick-changing series of innovative combinations (e.g. "axe kicks," "knee smashes," "flying front kicks" and "elbow strikes"). Each round ends with a burst that combines higher-impact plyometrics with challenging kicks (e.g. jumping jacks with roundhouse kicks). The next round uses dumbbells to add a body-sculpting element to the earlier combos. The final round firms your abs with a mix of standing and floor exercises. Requires 2 to 8 lb. dumbbells; weighted gloves and a medicine ball are optional. ©2011. DVD has: 9 premixes (34 to 73 min. alternate workouts), Chapter menus, Wide screen.

Best kickboxing DVD in my collection!
I bought this DVD about a month ago and it has quickly become my absolute favorite. I'm at an intermediate level and this is perfect. Once I get to an advanced level it will still be good to use, but I'll try the more challenging moves at that point. I really love the pre-mix workouts, which give a good variety for whatever type of workout you want. I highly recommend it. The combinations can be a bit hard to follow at first, but within a week I had them down pat. I like this DVD much better than Jillian Michael's kickboxing video. - posted by Julie on 4/23/2012
Great Workout
Kickboxing for a long, long time and have to tell you I quit paying over $100.00 a month for a class and am now doing this video. It is Fabulous. - posted by Donna on 4/19/2012
Tough and Delightful
I'm an advanced exerciser and this is one of the toughest kickboxing workouts I've ever done. Susan's form is impeccable; her cuing is good and the choreography is fun and unique. I like that the cardio blasts and the metabolic weights segment are both kickbox-style; there is a true MMA feeling throughout the whole workout. This truly is a total-body workout but it is also enjoyable. If you love kickboxing and love to work hard, you will love this tape! - posted by Bonnie on 4/12/2012
Adaptable to all levels and in-between
Kick-boxing is my favorite exercise and this is a good workout which you can adapt to many levels, even more than is shown. Having had recent knee surgery, I was careful not to snap kick as is shown but I lifted my leg as 1 piece as high as the exercisers did (usually!). Also, I found myself bouncing barely off the floor as an alternative to the low-impact shown vs. high impact. There are many pre-mixes to choose from but I did the whole workout today and I'm probably 20 years older than Susan. I was always able to adapt to my strengths and weaknesses. The Metabolic Weights section is more for metabolism jolts than actual strengthening as the moves are too fast. It includes lower body moves with weights. The abs section continues with weights and medicine ball (you can use dumbbells if you don't have a ball), standing and on a mat. You must be familiar with kick-boxing form before attempting this. Susan's cueing could be improved. - posted by Christine on 3/28/2012
Great Workout - no dread factor!!
I loved this workout. The first time I did it I just played all however there are some great pre-mixes and my favourite is each combo and blast followed by weight work. This really kept my heart-rate up and although the workout is about 75mins long it just flew by. The core section using the medicine ball is also very effective. Susan has a lovely calm manner, cues exceptionally well and in conclusion, if you like kick-boxing, I can't recommend this workout highly enough. - posted by Sylvia on 3/26/2012
One of my new favorites!
I am an advanced exerciser (Amy Bento, Cathe, Patrick Goudeau, Jari Love) and have more exercise videos than should probably be allowed. But I haven't purchased too many kickboxing DVDs as of late, because they all seem fairly similar. However, based on the reviews, I thought I'd give this one a chance. So glad I did! Absolutely love it. Original moves, fast-paced, no time to get bored. Although the weight section won't likely offer strength gains, it does keep the heart rate up and adds more variety. I will reach for this DVD often. Hope to see more from this instructor! - posted by Carrie on 3/16/2012
Challenging Workout!
I love kickboxing workouts and other than Ilaria Montagnani I haven't found too many that I really enjoy. This workout is challenging and fun! I consider myself to be at an Intermediate level with some knee issues so I follow the modifier, Krissy, but I still work up a sweat. It is fast-paced and a little hard to keep up but that is what I like about it. It gives me something to work towards. I really liked the abs section as well. I will definitely buy more DVDs with this instructor. - posted by Betsy on 3/9/2012
Love this Workout!
This is a great workout! I do this all the time now. As someone else mentioned I love kickboxing workouts but not many advanced ones to chose from. This one is fun, challenging and left me sweaty by the end of round 4. This and Amy Bento's Kickbox Surge are great. I found the toning/abs rounds to be okay, but really do this for the kickboxing rounds. I do the cardio section was long a little longer. Looking forward to more workouts from Susan. - posted by Ericka on 2/12/2012
Like Kickbox-Dancing!
The kickbox portion of this workout is one of the most fun kickboxing workouts I've done. The choreography along with the music almost make me feel like I'm dancing. The combinations are unique and straightforward. She is friendly - definitely less bubbly than other instructors, with almost a Zen-like quality. I've had this DVD for three weeks and have done it over a dozen times. I can take or leave the weight training and ab segments. It's difficult to find great kickboxing workouts that are fun and challenging with being repetitious. This, as well as Cardio Kickbox Challenge are among my favorites. I hope Susan comes out with more workouts like this soon! - posted by Meghan on 2/9/2012
Solid Advanced Workout
I really liked this workout. The kick/punch combos were creative and fun. I really liked the metabolic weight training segment, more endurance than strength since she keeps the weights light, but still very challenging. There is also a nice variety of pre-mixes so you can keep the workout fresh. I do Cathe and Amy Bento and felt this may not have the over-the-top intensity the others do, but was still a solid advanced sweat-inducing workout. I highly recommend it!! - posted by Julie on 2/6/2012

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Premixes
X
These are alternate workouts created by the manufacturer. They use the same content as the main program (i.e. the very same video footage). But the sections are re-edited into pre-made alternative workouts that you select from a menu. These are often condensed versions of the main workout.
Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Wide screen
X
The program fully fills a wide-screen television screen. Note: These videos will display black bars at the top and bottom on a traditional 4 x 3 ratio TV screen.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Floor aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
