Certified instructor description: Two complete workouts — kickboxing and true boxing — plus two short stretch segments. Both workouts are very high-end productions with exquisite cuing. They’re safe, solid, no-nonsense fat-burners. The mixed-impact kickboxing program is co-taught with Keith Cooke, a 5-time karate champion. Besides the classic jabs, punches and kicks, you’ll also practice a variety of innovative, smooth-flowing combos/patterns. It features upbeat music with motivating drums. “Aerobox” is co-taught with 12-year veteran boxer, Michael Olajide. Filmed in a boxing ring setting, it has lots of jabs, hooks and upper cuts. But this is a true “boxer,” not “kickboxer” workout — it also includes higher-impact jump rope and shadow boxing routines. Driving, energizing music. A jump rope is suggested. ©1994 & 1999. Kathy Smith's Cardio Knockout

Love the Aerobox
I've loved the Aerobox workout since I rented it from the video store back in the mid 90s. It really gets the heart rate up and the jump rope se tion burns the calf and tightens the core. I also have Michael's AeroJump jump rope workout that i love. the kickboxing portion was so, so in my opinion mostly because the camera angles focused on Kathy and her form and technique was not the greatest. I wish they'd focused more on Keith then I would actually do the workout. Not a fan of Tai Chi because I like high energy and fast pace but I did like Keli's stretch portion. All in all you can't beat the price ...the 5 stars is for the Aerobox portion... - posted by Nicole on 4/30/2012
Bit dated now, but still gives a pleasant workout.
I'm not sure when the Aerobox workout was filmed, but the outfits scream of early '90s, if not late '80s! I'm not sure I like all the artsy camerawork and color changes, and I found the punch sequences to be really fast and difficult to keep up with while still staying on form. Kathy's form wasn't great on this, so I'd say definitely follow Michael's form and advice, not Kathy's. The skipping sequences were also fast, but they definitely get you sweating... The kickboxing workout is better, in my opinion. I like Keith Cooke. And Kelli looks intently serious about what she's doing -- you wouldn't want to mess with her. Again, Kathy doesn't have the greatest form, but she cues it well. I like the music on this workout, too. The kickboxing workout in general is pretty good. You work up a decent sweat but don't ever feel like it's too much or are gasping for breath. Like others have said, the back of the case gives an incorrect time of 120mins for the kickboxing workout - it's actually only about 50 minutes, I think. I'm not sold on the Tai Chi section. But I hate anything slow-paced. I'm sure it works if you follow it religiously, but I found that pointless and probably wouldn't do that part again. I think I'll keep this DVD in my rotation just for the kickboxing workout when I feel like a nice steady workout without draining me flat. - posted by Keira on 3/1/2012
Keeping it for the kickboxing
I enjoy the kickboxing part of this workout. It is challenging but easy to follow, and I like how it is broken down into segments. I do not like the aeroboxing workout at all. I'm not sure if that is because I have taken boxing classes before and this one doesn't seem to flow quite right. It can be done without a jump rope but not as effective. I can't actually jump rope in my house where I do my workouts. I also do not like their creative camera work - it is distracting. I read a few different comments that say Kathy can be annoying - and I agree. - posted by MMH on 3/1/2012
Knocked-out!
I like to try new-to-me exercise routines, and found Cardio Knockout to be extremely challenging. Aerobox is intensely non-stop cardio. (I did the rope jumping exercises on a mini trampoline.) Ditto for the kickboxing workout with Keith Cooke. I am also a fan of good motivating music, and these workouts have it in spades. I have done them on separate days and also consecutively. Prepare yourself - it's going to make you sweat! - posted by Karen on 7/24/2011
Good workout
I did the cardio kickbox workout today for the first time in years and enjoyed it a lot. I'm trying to add solid cardio into my mostly "aerobic weight training" workouts in order to burn more fat. I found this enjoyable and pretty easy to follow although I'm not well coordinated. I worked up a great all over sweat which surprised and pleased me. Wished it were longer with more drill sets of kicks, etc. but for a short workout it was good. - posted by sara on 7/11/2011
Good Value
This is a good price for 2 full length workouts with chapters. Kathy can be annoying but she is tolerable in these workouts 0 largely because she has the other instructors to work with. As for the kickboxing, be sure to watch Keith and Kelli because they have proper form. Kathy's form is not good at all. My calves were crying for mercy during the aerobox workout but I found all the jumping to be a bit boring. Also, I was distracted by the crazy editing - from black and white to color - then artsy camera angles. It is unnecessary. - posted by Valerie on 7/8/2011
Kathy Smith
I appreciate Kathy having 2 pros doing the workouts. She is very competent, as an instructor, but very smart having professional kickboxers on these workouts. A good workout & fun, also. - posted by Roxanne on 7/7/2011
one of my all time favorites
I purchased this DVD to replace the kickboxing portion that I had worn out on tape. Much to my surprise, the DVD includes the Aerobox workout tape I also had enjoyed for many years. These are fantastic aerobic workouts that definitely shape the lower and upper body and leave you feeling really stronger overall. The Aerobox in particular is a killer workout for the thighs. Highly recommend these to those looking for a tough but achievable workout. - posted by Mary on 8/30/2010
LOVE! SO Glad They Put Both of These Together!
I used to have both of these workouts on separate VHS, and loved them, so having them both on one DVD is great! What I love about Kathy is that she does her research, isn't afraid to let other experts take the lead, and really focuses on proper form and cueing. I have been doing her workouts since high school (in the late 80's, yes I'm THAT old, lol!) and always come back to her. - posted by Alyssa on 6/19/2010
I Heart Kathy
I love Kathy and I love her workouts, I have had the kick boxing tape, I like it so much I bought the DVD version, great work out. You really feel it the next day. - posted by Marian on 6/8/2010

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact

Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

X
Workout 1: Mixed
Workout 2: Higher
Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
