Certified instructor description: This "frontside" program primarily targets your abs, arms and legs (it's ideally paired with Jillian's complimentary "backside" DVD). The workout features an easy-to-follow series of aero/tone circuits — alternating between fat-burning cardio and muscle-firming toning. But it's more than just a “workout” — Jillian also wants to teach you about fitness (e.g. while you’re exercising, she explains the “hows” and “whys” of each movement). In fact, it’s filmed like an actual personal training session with Jillian. She’s one-on-one with her client, offering technique tips plus lots of bootcamp-style encouragement. Requires an X-ertube and 3 to 5 lb. dumbbells. A small, 4-inch-high “step box” is also optional. No music. Includes motivational interviews with successful weight losers. ©2006 (discontinued and then re-released in 2010). DVD has: Chapter menus, Region 1.

Jillian Michaels for Beginners: Frontside

No go-to
This is not a go-to dvd for me. I don't mind the white background, lack of music etc. What I do mind is the up-down, up-down throughout. I am 62 and when I am up I like to do continuous exercises, then, when I lie down on a mat I like to stay there for a while and do those exercises. However, Jillian is a good instructor; she clearly explains the moves and how they effect your body. The exercises are also challenging enough for a beginner, but it is definitely beginner. - posted by Patricia on 4/8/2012
Awesome for Beginners
I got this dvd a couple of days ago. If you're like me: WAY outa shape...This dvd definitely works & is an awesome BEGINNERS workout. I'm stiff/hurting in places I didn't even know I had muscles in! I plan to continue to use this dvd as well as the backside one until I'm sure I can upgrade to a more difficult workout. The white background is rather blah, but it helps (at least me) to concentrate on the workout rather than watch other things and not get the workout I set out to do. - posted by Jana on 2/8/2012
Enjoyed this DVD!
This was the first Jillian Michaels dvd I have tried and I really enjoyed it. I always appreciate when an instructor focuses on form and technique. She gave a lot of explanation which is great for a beginner. This is the first dvd I did that discussed circuit training and by the end of the workout I was sweating and ready to stop. I'd recommend this in your dvd rotation. - posted by cap on 7/15/2011
Great for beginners!
This video is fantastic for beginners! It gets your body accustomed to working out again. Just after two weeks of doing it every other day I can do the whole workout without stopping! Better yet, I already see more definition in my legs and arms! worth the buy! - posted by Lolita on 5/30/2011
Dreadful!
I did not expect this DVD to be so so boring..After I completed the exercises, I did not even feel worked out. I understand that this is beginner but it could have been a bit more interesting. AND PLEASE, what was the idea of having an all white background. HORRIBLE! - posted by Cheryl on 12/22/2010
Not great!
It's not that I don't like Jillian because I have other DVDs from her BUT...this one and her other one Backside are really for people who are just starting out. Even so, I find she could have had background music and the set is horribly boring. Sorry but I would not spend my money on these two. - posted by Joanne on 12/14/2010
great BEGINNER dvd-note BEGINNERS only!!
1 have already posted a review for her beginner backside dvd which is equally relevant here!1 won't repeat it all-main points-white background is REALLY effective as she stresses technique/form in this slower workout -the all white background causes a silouette effect to really help you see form/technique..she explains each exercise thoroughly as well as verbally talking about it's individual benefits. it's cardio circuits alternating with muscle isolation style weights.Very easy to follow-slow,no choreography..sadly many of her fans will rush and buy this excellent tape and be disappointed as it's SO different from all of her other more advanced/ demanding dvds.It really IS a beginners tape and an excellent beginners dvd IMO.It has chapters for each circuit so you can mix n match-each circuit is her and 1 previous BL contestant-again less distraction with only 2 people -much like a personal training section.hope my review lets people realize what this dvd is really about so they'll realize if it is /is not suitable for their needs. - posted by dulcy on 12/11/2010
BORING!
I am a beginner exerciser and not really a fan of Jillian Michaels to start with because I viewed all her other exercise DVDs and thought they were too tough! but I wanted to give her a chance so I bought this beginner DVD. What a mistake! I was never so bored in my life! No action, no energy, white set and 1 other person. Very very disappointing....Don't bother! - posted by Carla on 12/10/2010
Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.
sample time graph
Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Region 1
X
This DVD is designed for US and Canadian DVD players. It will NOT play in most foreign country players.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Floor aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
