Certified instructor description: Two easy-to-follow, balance-focused workouts. One uses a stability ball, one only requires a pillow. Both programs are led by PBS TV star Suzanne Andrews (a friendly instructor with 25 years of therapeutic exercise experience). The first program is a little easier. It includes standing and chair-based moves like standing on one leg or pushing into a pillow while seated. The second program begins with similar routines and ends with stability ball exercises. They range from simple bouncing-on-the-ball movements to ab-focused floorwork. Both programs are demonstrated at three fitness levels. Requires a stability ball; some exercisers also use a soft inflatable ball (instead of the pillow). ©2011. DVD has: Music only option, Wide screen.

Functional Fitness: Better Balance

Too good to keep quiet
I never write reviews, but the Better Balance DVD is so good, I had to share! When I turned 67 last year, I vowed it was time to make some changes. One commitment I made was to begin exercising daily so I could be around for many more birthdays with my kids, grandkids and, eventually, my great-grandkids. Over the years, I have tried to watch my weight, but the older I get, the more I see a need to keep those bones and muscles working properly and not getting stiff. Plus, I want to keep the pounds off to avoid heart problems that run in my family. When I started searching for an exercise DVD to use at home, I was a little frustrated until I came across the Better Balance DVD. The music isn't crazy - it's set to tunes I would listen to anytime. The exercises are easy, fun and I feel fabulous! At first, I didn't want to use the exercise ball, but finally relented. And I love it! The title is so fitting...I do have better balance. I walk more, I am rarely stiff and even get up and down stairs at my daughter's house with ease when I'm chasing after the younger grandkids. I hate to admit, but before I started using the Better Balance DVD, I found myself sitting on the couch more often in front of the television and having difficulty getting up. Even moving in and out of the car was sometimes a task because I was so stiff. This workout has made all the difference. The stiffness is gone and I have so much more energy. I love starting my day with it! - posted by Doris on 1/22/2012
Gave me balance for Horseback riding
I'm not that old, in my 50's, live in the country and fell off my horse. It was a good thing I didn't break my bones. Well that was the last straw and so I thought I'd try this to get better balance to ride my horse. I love this DVD, it's like it was made for me. Suzanne Andrews is a breath of fresh air..full of variety and information!!! YAY !!! - posted by Tracy-ann on 12/17/2011
Fantastic for Balance
My balance isn't good and I'm always scared of falling so when my doctor told me to do an exercise program to help, the first thing I thought of was what if I fall down doing the exercises? She explained that this DVD can be done sitting down and I asked her how can that help if I'm sitting down. She said that Suzanne Andrews teaches therapeutic exercises to strengthen up my stomach and back and when I get stronger I can do the standing exercises for my legs. I have to admit, I was skeptical at first, but these exercises really work and I my balance is getting better. I'm 75 and I appreciate the relaxed pace on this DVD, not too fast. - posted by Joyce on 12/12/2011
Just My Pace
I'm a couch potato at heart, but I know I need to exercise and my legs are getting weak so I didn't know where to start. I'm also pretty overweight so there's not much out there that I feel comfortable doing. One day I pried the remote control out of my husbands hand and found this wonderful show on PBS. Functional Fitness with Suzanne Andrews is wonderful and the Better Balance DVD is just right and goes at MY pace. Too many instructors are way too fast for me. I may not be young, but with this program, I sure do feel younger than my 78 years. - posted by Frances on 12/8/2011
Easy Exercise for Big People
I'm really overweight and embarrassed to exercise in front of people. I went to a class and couldn't do hardly any of the exercises. My friend told me about Suzanne Andrews DVD's and I'm so glad because this is something that I can actually do and it's given me confidence with my balance. - posted by Connie on 12/6/2011
Easy Exercises for Seniors
I enjoyed the variety of the exercises and it's easy enough for me to do. While it's true that this dvd could seem boring to someone wanting a tough workout, it's really a great match for seniors who want a slower moving dvd. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone whose really fit but I'm 76 years old and want to be healthy and most videos are to hard for me. I'm not a spring chicken anymore, but I don't want to end up like my neighbor in a nursing home because she fell and broke her hip and had to stay there because she couldn't take care of herself. - posted by Elsie on 11/29/2011
Good Therapeutic Exercises
As a medical doctor who specializes in women's health, I often prescribe physical therapy for my patients with balance deficits as a preventative measure to falling and breaking bones. Because of it's gentle pace and therapeutic exercises, this Better Balance DVD is both safe, effective and I highly recommend it for the senior population. - posted by Dr. Mache Seibel on 11/29/2011
Just OK...
Well, its not that this video is bad, its just not strong enough. Its alright, I guess, for seniors. Was disappointed. - posted by Cinthia on 11/27/2011
Seniors Best Fall Prevention
This DVD is great for my mom who is 78 and really needs to work on her balance. Since falling in the bathroom, I've had grab bars installed, but my mom needs more than that to steady herself, so I took her to Physical Therapy and she did well, but the insurance only paid for awhile. Since this DVD works on 'core' muscles and balance exercises with a pace slow enough for my mom, I feel that this work out is sensible and safe. She can't do the balance exercises on the ball yet, but the instructor, Suzanne Andrews from PBS TV, offers an alternative seated version which are the same exercises I saw my mom do in Physical Therapy. My mom said it's helping her maintain what she learned in therapy. - posted by Ruth on 11/24/2011
Great for Seniors
This is the perfect dvd for me because my legs were getting weak from too much sitting just like my kids told me they would. I saw this program on my PBS station and just loved it right away. Easy to follow, no too hard and Suzanne Andrews is a delight to listen to. No yelling and screaming. My legs are getting strong enough to get up and down the stairs again without having to worry about falling. If you need better balance, this is it. - posted by Louise on 11/22/2011

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Music only option
X
This feature allows you to play only the music, without any cuing (after you’ve learned the movements and you just want to do the workout without listening to the instruction).
Wide screen
X
The program fully fills a wide-screen television screen. Note: These videos will display black bars at the top and bottom on a traditional 4 x 3 ratio TV screen.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Stretch type
X
Athletic: Traditional sports-style, all-physical stretches. It is the least mind-body focused.

Yoga: Carefully designed poses that emphasize breath, concentration and mental awareness. It also includes the more flowing yoga style – Power Yoga.

Tai Chi: All-standing, very fluid poses (it looks like a person moving in slow-motion). The Chinese called Tai Chi "meditation in motion."

Specialty: Seniors
X
Workouts especially designed for older exercisers (e.g. featuring seniors participants or older music styles). They may include all three basic exercise types: aerobics, toning and stretch.
