Certified instructor description: Four distinct dance segments: jazz, Latin and club-funk aerobics plus ballet toning — this DVD lets you mix and match them in any order. You’re sure to burn calories and have fun; it’s super-easy to follow and packed with Denise’s legendary enthusiasm (“be a little flashy,” “strut your stuff,” “great, now you’ve got it!”). Each 10-minute cardio section features non-intimidating dances in an add-on style (e.g. Latin: salsas, cha chas and mambos that build from basic to slightly more complex). The ballet toning is graceful and calming — from standing lunges, pliés and arabesques to floorwork planks and crunches. ©2006. DVD has: Programmable chapters, Close captions, Region 1.

Denise Austin's Fat Burning Dance Mix

Lots of fun
For someone who usually struggles picking up dance moves, this was surprisingly easy to pick up and tons of fun to do. Even my two teenage daughters look forward to doing these workouts with me. - posted by Miranda on 4/27/2012
Loved this workout!
I absolutely loved this workout! I am a 62 year old grandma with Fibromyalgia and severe arthritis in my low back, but I am pretty much able to keep up with this. Most dance workouts I just cannot do, but Denise does the moves enough I caught on pretty quick. I have to adapt the sculpt part due to back and tendonitis in my elbow, so I just do different moves through part of this . - posted by Sue on 9/6/2011
Nice Workout
I do enjoy this workout. It is a nice break from Leslie Sansone. I do agree that her cueing is not best and she did keep calling a step a merengue, which it is not. I do like her upbeat personality. - posted by Susan on 1/30/2011
The absolute best!
I felt compelled to write in defense of some of the negative reviews. As an 18 year veteran fitness instructor with a significant dance background-I loved this video. The Latin,Jazz,Club Funk and Ballet Tone were all great-a smorgesboard of different dance styles in an easy to follow format. Her cueing was right on target(have felt that about all of her videos).Denises' personality is upbeat, outgoing and really just adorable. She's like a girlfriend without even knowing her.She is encouraging and makes you want to do your best!Anyone from a beginner to intermediate/advanced should try this DVD-well worth the money! - posted by Laura C. on 1/17/2011
so, so...
This video is not great! I agree with all the others, the ballet part is amazing. Denise, if you read this, dance DVDs are not your thing. You are much better with toning, cardio, yoga and walking workouts! - posted by Renee on 12/22/2010
So-So
Denise's cueing in this is HORRIBLE. She doesn't say what you'll be doing next, until you're actually doing it (or staring, confused, at the TV). The workout itself is beginner, and I had to add a lot of running/bouncing in place during all of the marching movements to keep my heartrate up. I think it would have been a lot more fun if she would have just said what was coming up, was more consistent with how many moves you'd be doing on each side, and managed to stay on-beat herself. - posted by Jamie on 11/22/2010
Would Not Recommend
I usually like Denise Austin and her videos. I have several. I am 49 and a former ballet and jazz dancer. The dance segments are monotonous, boring and too repetitive. It's not an intermediate dance video, more like beginner. It is possible to have a dance video with choreography that is simple but still fun and stimulating, but this video does not accomplish that. I would have liked it better if Denise had done the dancing by herself because there is one girl on the video behind her to the left who is really good. It makes Denise look real sloppy and silly to the point of it being distracting. Another thing is this video will absolutely not get your heartrate up enough to get any benefit. If you are looking to move your body around a little bit, I guess it would be okay. The reason I gave this video two stars is that the stretches she does are really good, if not better than the stretch segments on other videos. The way you can program the chapters is good also, but it's not a good enough reason to buy the video. I agree with everyone else that the ballet sculpt section is indeed the best segment, but again, not worth investing in the whole video. Do yourself a favor and always read the reviews and then purchase from Collage. It will save you money and disappointment. - posted by Stacey on 2/24/2010
Just OK
The cardio dance segments are kinda fun and I like that you can mix and match to create your own workout. It's also nice to do a 10-minute segment plus warm-up and cool-down. But the ballet toning section is horrible--more jazz moves than ballet and she moves through poses quickly instead of holding to build strength. - posted by Jane on 2/21/2010
Fun!
I enjoyed trying the different types of dance in the segments on this DVD, and the ballet section is especially good. I would rate the dance segments at a beginner level of intensity, but the ballet sculpting is more intermediate in intensity. Denise's instruction is easy to follow and I enjoy her encouraging personality. This is a fun workout, one that my older children also enjoy doing with me. - posted by Julie (Busy Mom of Seven Gets in Shape) on 1/22/2010
Wonderful Cardio Dancing Workouts
This workout DVD is perfect for me. I am a beginner to exercise and am very heavy so I needed something low-impact and super fun and to keep me motivated and coming back for more. This workout does not disappoint. In fact I have been doing just one of the 10 minute dance segments (Except the Ballet Sculpt) every other day (w/ the additions of Denise’s': Hit the Spot Pilates for the Hips, Thighs, and Buns; Personal Training System low intensity Upper Body and Lower Body; and Get Fit Fast Level 1 Upper Body & Get Fit Fast Level 1 Abs. I workout every day for only 20 minutes) and in 6 weeks of using this combination of these Denise Austin workout DVD’s have successfully lost 30 pounds! I cannot believe how fast I saw BIG results and I know that these dancing workouts have made a huge difference. Cardio is way important for weight loss! But I would recommend this workout DVD to someone who is just beginning cardio fitness and/or are very overweight. But for someone in okay to great shape I don't think that this DVD is for you. Save your money and go with The FIRM instead! - posted by Emily on 11/8/2009

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Programmable chapters
X
At the beginning of your workout, you can select the exact segments you want to play that day. The DVD will then play all those segments in the order you chose.
Region 1
X
This DVD is designed for US and Canadian DVD players. It will NOT play in most foreign country players.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Floor aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
