Certified instructor description: By Michelle Dozois, it’s an easy-to-follow workout that focuses on “fun,” not “exercise.” Like joining an informal party, you’ll find yourself just shakin’ your hips as you’re movin’ to the music. Michelle’s friendly interactive rapport makes both fluid and natural (she explicitly encourages each dancer’s personal style; you can follow along or incorporate your own approach). The dances — never complex or over-choreographed — range from basic grapevines and chassés to interesting Latin and jazz (with lots of large-limb and low-to-the-ground moves to maintain the intensity). It ends with an 11-minute step-by-step instructional segment. ©2006. DVD has: Chapter menus.

Dance Off the Inches: Fat Burning Jam

I love Michelle Dozois! She is great
She has the perfect aerobics for everyone. :) I love her exercises. - posted by Liz on 10/10/2011
Love Michelle!
Michelle's workouts are so well thought out and this one in particular is great. She is very easy to follow with great cuing. I love dance workouts because they are fun, but with Michelle, you really feel you have gotten a great complete workout as well. She is top notch! - posted by pamela on 9/24/2011
Pretty Good!
Michelle Dozois workouts are always a gamble for me-I either love them or hate them. I was hesitant to buy this based on the lukewarm reviews, but I'm gathering some 30 minute cardio workouts to combine on days that I do 30 minute strength training DVDs. I think this is a lot of fun. Like all workouts, you get out of it what you put into it. I exaggerated the movements, jumped and bounced when they didn't on the DVD in order to boost my calorie count. I also wear a heartrate monitor, and with some added effort I hit 148-150 (I'm 32). So, not an intense workout, but it's there if you work it. I'm deducting one star for there being so many pivots and turns that are impossible on carpets. I wish instructors would remember that not all of us are exercising on hardwood floors. Also, in the last dance it seemed like we did tons of box-steps on the right, without an equal number on the left. - posted by Jamie on 11/30/2010
Fun Dance Workout
I was a little worried by the poor reviews but I bought this because I like Michelle. While it isn't as intense as some aerobic workouts, it is a decent dance workout. I am an advanced exerciser who supplements my workouts with dance DVDs for fun and stress relief. The first time I did this I combined it with a 30 minute athletic style cardio workout. I burned over 1000 calories with both workouts - so it does have the potential to burn fat. You just may not want to depend on it as your only workout or use it for a lighter day. I own about 60 workout DVDs and 20 that are dance. I loved that Michelle used some unique moves and let the other dancers participate and add to the workout. I will keep this on my dance rotation for sure. - posted by Missy on 1/31/2010
This is rest not cardio
My heart rate didn't even breach the 135 mark and I'm 32 and it needs to be 150-160. If you are heavier, out of shape...this would get you going in a fun atmosphere but if you are addicted to workouts and are in pretty good condition this is an absolute waste of time. - posted by Ashley on 10/27/2009
Beginner/Intermediate at best
I like Michele, I do her total body circuit workout. I am 48 and like intermediate/advance workouts. I am looking for a 30 min. fat burning aerobics workout that is not high impact. I just did not feel like I got a workout, just didn't get my heart rate up. I wear a heart rate monitor. I would rate higher stars if it were not rated intermediate level because Michele's cueing is good. If you like a dance workout that is less intense it is a fun workout. - posted by Teresa on 9/7/2009
Great for beginners with dance background, intermediates with none
If you are a beginner with dance background, you can concentrate on getting all the moves in for this workout and you'll be working hard. If you're an intermediate who finds dance workouts difficult to follow, you'll be able to follow this one. I like Michelle a lot and liked the way the TIFTed sections were spiced up with new arm moves. I did think the warm up and cool down were too fast tempo'd, though. - posted by Tracy on 3/6/2009
Good for people with two left feet
If you have two left feet, as I do, you will appreciate the tutorial section of this DVD. It definitely helped me learn the steps. I have tried other dance videos before, but tripped over my own feet while attempting the complicated choreography! This video is a little bland; Michelle reminds me of a suburban soccer mom trying to be "cool" ;) But she is pleasant and encouraging, and cues well. I give this a grade of "B". - posted by Anne on 2/26/2009
Don't Know About Fat Burning, But It Sure is Fun!
I don't agree with negative reviews-I really like this one. I'm 47 and a former dancer, and I enjoyed the choreography-what a great change of pace from walking, marching, sidestepping etc. I had fun! Michelle is great, and all the Dance Off the Inches videos I have tried I have loved. The only negative I can think of is one spin move that is impossible to do in athletic shoes on a carpet, but it was easy to modify. I like interesting low impact videos, and if that is what you are looking for, I recommend this one. Sizzling Salsa is my favorite though, but I believe you'll like this one too. The Dance off the Inches videos are well thought out by giving you broken down instruction if you want it, and the choreography is always interesting and doable which is important. I don't get bored doing these, and they go by fast because it's so much fun. - posted by Stacey on 7/22/2008
Fun workout
This is a fun workout for days when you're not really into doing a serious workout or are short on time but still want to do something. The steps are easy to learn but not so easy that it is boring. Michelle's voice is a little high pitched and she never stops talking but it doesn't bother me too much. - posted by Stacy on 5/14/2008

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
