Certified instructor description: Non-stop, highly choreographed step aerobics followed by unique toning exercises. Ann Marie Sill’s cuing is low-key but clear; you’ll always know what’s coming next. The cardio is all eight-count and low-impact, but it’s tough for two reasons: Mentally — lots of pivots, spins, mambos and cha chas. Physically — lots of lifting your body up and down on the step. The toning is dynamic and well-transitioned; it works multiple muscle groups at once (e.g. lower-body lunges, upper-body presses while doing core balance moves). Requires an X-ertube and 3 to 10 lb. dumbbells; a medicine ball is optional. Note: A "core disc" (like a small Bosu) is used by some of the exercisers to add a balance element in a few routines. It is not required. ©2006. Not available in stores. DVD has: Programmable chapters.

CIA 2602: Step Generation with Strength Circuit

Great choreography
At first I just watched this one, and when I did, I thought the instructor was loony (in a good way)! She seems to think in odd numbers, and has a lot of moves that are 3-, 5-, or 7-count moves. As I watched, I thought, "How am I ever going to do that?" However, once I actually did the workout, I was amazed by how easy it was to follow her. In the end, I love the choreography. This is a very fun step workout. - posted by Lyn on 7/26/2011
OK
This DVD is OK. The step portion is complex, but not so hard where you would be completely lost. Her cueing is good and I'm looking forward to doing it again since I didn't get it on the first try. I wish the intensity was higher, so I'm finding myself adding jumps or jogs in place of knees and marches, but it is presented as low-impact. The weight section is mostly compound and depending on the weight used, pretty challenging and well rounded. In-between is a med-ball section as cool-down after the step, or warmup before the weights, but with a heavy ball I found it to be much more than that, quite excellent actually, and is my favorite part of the DVD. One thing completely missing is a stretch at the end which makes it somewhat incomplete, so you will have to add it yourself. Overall, it was a good challenge and better than the negative reviews. - posted by holly on 2/4/2009

good choreography, poor video
Once you learn the choreography, it's a fine work-out. Her cuing is not good, and at one point she starts over prematurely (i.e. before completing all the combinations) - very confusing until you learn what to expect. Worst of all, NO cool-down stretch! - posted by Diana on 2/26/2007
Not my cup of tea
Hi I was looking for a low impact workout and I thought something from CIA would be great! But this is not for me. I had alot of trouble trying to follow her choreography. There was too much pivoting, turning and going all around the step for me. I found it extremely frustrating. Ann Marie seems like a nice person, but not the best cuer. I'm a big Cathe fan, Cathe's cueing and choreography is terrific! I hope she comes out with more low impact workouts; at least they are tough, but doable and fun! - posted by Jennifer on 1/25/2007
Disappointed
I own and enjoy all advanced workout dvd's (Cathe, Mindy, and all CIA workouts). But, I was very disappointed with this one. I tried doing it several times, but can not get the choregraphy yet. And, when I do get it at some point, it does not get my heart-rate up. The toning is not tough and did nothing to me. I would rank it as an intermediate workout with very advanced choregraphy. Good luck! - posted by HomeFitFreak on 9/6/2006
Breakdown
I am an instructor myself, and although the final choreography is really good, I don't know what she is thinking of during her breakdown. This is the same way I felt about her first video. Loved the final routine, used some of the moves, but made up a more make sense breakdown of my own. I would think this would confuse people at home. I do like her personality and her strength work. - posted by Sue on 6/19/2006
STEP GENERATION ROCKS THE WORLD!!
Ann Marie Sill's first video was wonderful and her warm personality made me smile while she kicked my butt into gear! Step Generation once again combines Ann Marie's warmness with her presentor skills and awesome choreography. The video is incredibly fun and light, fast-moving so your workout flies by, and like coffee with a good friend, you wonder where the time has gone. Ann Marie's unique and refreshing choreography and toning moves are just what I needed to jump-start me into swimsuit season!I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend this video to anyone, unless you dislike smiling and having fun!(have I mentioned how great I think this is) - posted by Shannon on 4/8/2006
Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Programmable chapters
X
At the beginning of your workout, you can select the exact segments you want to play that day. The DVD will then play all those segments in the order you chose.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Step aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The step aerobics segments involve stepping up and down on a platform. The moves range from simple stepping to more choreographed exercises. These segments require a step bench platform. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
