Certified instructor description: A fast-paced program that smoothly intermixes step and off-step movements (e.g. four counts on and four counts off the bench). From the warm-up to the stretch, Cathe keeps you moving, having fun ... and burning fat. You get four diverse combinations. The first three are jam-packed with basic step movements; the fourth section features slightly more choreographed patterns. They're all quick-moving — but easy to follow — because Cathe cues ahead and always tells you what to do (“remember, it's the outside leg that starts”). She finishes with an intense blast that is all athletic — lots of kicks, repeaters and squats-off-the-board. DVD also includes a "bonus" step-aerobics/dumbbell-toning interval segment (21 minutes). Requires a step. ©2011. DVD has: 7 premixes (32 to 71 min. alternate workouts), Chapter menus, Wide screen.

Cathe Friedrich's Low Impact Challenge

Fantastic Workout!
This video is fantastic and easy to follow if you are a current stepper! I really like the challenge within Cathe's step videos and really get a great workout with each and every video. - posted by Sara on 4/27/2012
Cathe Die Hard
My sister in law have numerous Cathe exercise tapes and had to add this one. We are pushing the big 5-0 and some of her intense workouts are getting too intense without modifications. Don't let "low-impact" fool you. If anyone can make you sweat with both feet on the ground, Cathe can! And just when you don't think there are any new step combinations, you need to get this dvd! Cathe has managed to come up with some unique combinations that we're still trying to learn (I think we're trying to get her old combos out of our head!) We appreciate Cathe's warm-up and stretch too...We exercise first thing in the morning and often have to add more warm up to other routines. You need to add this to your library... - posted by Sharon on 4/6/2012
You need to do the Low Impact Extreme Premix
In my opinion this is not Intermediate at all. I enjoy the first 50 min but if you tack on the 21 min circuit you will definitely sweat buckets! This is one of my all time favorite workouts. I only have one criticism. Cathe's cueing is really bad in this video. Once you learn the routine it becomes less of an issue. This is definitely as hard as After Burn and Athletic Training. - posted by Jennifer on 3/27/2012
Called Intermediate, but if you add the bonus it's Advanced+
This workout is fun and if you are new to step, I suggest trying this one first. It will help you get a hang of doing a lot of choreography without working you out too much. That's not to say it isn't a great workout because it is. If you are an advanced exerciser poke around the premixes and find the premix that includes the full workout and the 20 minute bonus. I do this regularly and each time, I just know I've taken my fitness to another level. The bonus part includes some weights, but I don't use weights, which is helpful because if I did, I wouldn't be able to finish the entire thing. This is my second Cathe video and although the workouts work you well, seeing the choreography for the fist time is always discouraging. It's 100% worth it to keep at it though. - posted by Grace on 3/24/2012
Forget it!
This might be low impact, but it’s definitely not going to protect at-risk knees or ankles with all its pivots and turns. I've been doing step aerobics, floor aerobics, and various toning workouts for two decades now, but the coreo on this is maddeningly complex. Sure, it is interesting, but Cathe's cueing is practically non-existent. She doesn't explain the moves much, she rarely (if ever) tells you which side or foot to use next, and she jumps right into new variations before you have a chance to settle in to the original combination. I like variety, but this workout felt like a game of 52 Pick-up! - posted by Kim on 3/22/2012
I love this workout!
I am a high intermediate to low advanced exerciser and this one kicked my butt! I did all the cardio step plus the 21 min bonus. I did not find the choreography to be that challenging. If you can do Christi Taylor's choreography, then you should have no trouble with Cathe's. I love the music. All in all a 5 Star Workout for me! - posted by Jennifer on 2/29/2012
Nice Steady Cardio with a Great Leg Burn and (Bonus section)
I'm surprised at the amount of confusion people are having with this routine, from reading the comments. I watched the dvd a couple times, then when I tried it, I got most of it. And on the third time I was doing pretty good, there are a couple times when we turn away from the screen so that took a little longer to match the footwork, but overall a really fun workout. I know it says low impact, but it could be easily changed. Also I think the main way to make it harder one needs to really use the arms more, and she doesn't do a lot of choreography for the arms. I did like the burpees and push ups in the routine, what an awesome addition. This is my first Cathe dvd to do and I found this dvd was a great way to ease into her teaching style, since so many of her dvds are advanced nowadays. I also was looking for a low impact step to help strengthen my ankle after an injury. - posted by Lisa K. on 2/23/2012
too fast to follow, instructor gives no explanation
I have been stepping for years and I could not follow most of the moves in this video. No explanation is given and the instructor does not slow down so you can follow her. I even let a friend of mine, who is a fitness instructor for step aerobics, and she could not follow along. Very disappointing!! - posted by Kristen on 2/14/2012
Hard to follow
I had really hoped she would have explained or shown some of turns and trickier steps. Hard to watch the video AND turn . An insert showing it in slow motion maybe. I'll keep trying and I do like the lower impact and quick pace. - posted by Ginny on 2/10/2012
A New Favorite
I am at an intermediate level exerciser both in intensity and choreography (and 52 years old). This workout is challenging for me in both areas which makes it extremely fun and interesting. I have done it several times and make considerable progress with the choreography each time I do it, and get a solid workout. I love how my brain gets a workout too. The cuing is generally very good and perfectly adequate for someone who has a knack for moderate choreography, but I would appreciate some more rhythmic cuing, both anticipatory and simultaneous with the exercise. (I find I can more easily catch on to more complex moves when I hear the cue said in rhythm with the count). Cathe is a fun and motivating instructor! - posted by Kay on 2/5/2012

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Premixes
X
These are alternate workouts created by the manufacturer. They use the same content as the main program (i.e. the very same video footage). But the sections are re-edited into pre-made alternative workouts that you select from a menu. These are often condensed versions of the main workout.
Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Wide screen
X
The program fully fills a wide-screen television screen. Note: These videos will display black bars at the top and bottom on a traditional 4 x 3 ratio TV screen.
