Certified instructor description: A non-stop kickboxing challenge that sometimes uses a medicine ball or dumbbell to maximize effectiveness. It’s fast-paced and fun with exceptionally well-structured “kickbox choreography” (i.e. your upper and lower body are working together in true aerobic-style combinations). The upper-body moves range from punches and blocks to “speed bags” and “elbow smashes.” The complementary lower-body exercises include jump kicks, crescent kicks and “machine gun kicks.” Short medicine ball segments are inserted between the kickbox intervals. Moving the ball high-to-low across your body increases fat-burning as it engages your core muscles (and adds variety). Requires a 5 to 10 lb. medicine ball or a dumbbell. ©2008. DVD has: 5 premixes (33 to 74-min. alternate workouts), Chapter menus.

Amy Bento's In the Ring

Good Stuff!
This workout was fun, and the medicine ball segments were challenging. This one is not as intense as her Kickbox Surge or Kickbox Xtreme, but the fun factor is definitely there. I do it on days that I am physically tired but still need a decent workout. Yes, the combos are somewhat complex, but to me, that is half the fun. I stumble through a couple of times, but by the third time I have it down pat and can really work it without getting bored. I would recommend this one! - posted by Brittany W on 7/5/2011
Perfect
I love this workout. Amy does a perfect job with adding intervals with a med ball oh my god what a workout. I was completely wet after doing this workout. By the time I went to bed after the first time of this workout I could barely move. I workout out with other Amy advanced videos and I have to say this is one of her best ones. Awesome workout! - posted by Heather on 2/16/2011
Don't let the time scare you
This is a great workout. Lots of unique punch/kick combinations I hadn't seen before and good music. There is not a lot of advance cuing but Amy does cue. She spends minimal time setting up combinations so the first time I did it there was some rewinding involved. The good part of that of course is you won't waste any time once you know the routine and each combination repeats several times so you should know it much better by the end. Not a lot of instruction on form or moves so some prior kickboxing experience would be beneficial, if not ideal. There is one combination that may pose some problems to the workout space challenged. I loved some of the medicine ball work (less so the part where she wanted me to toss and catch an 8 pound medicine ball over my head.) If you don't have a medicine ball, a dumbbell will suffice. I did this the first time the entire way through and overall loved it. There are a few high impact moves but they are easily modifiable and she sometimes will give you options. Best of all there are 5 mixes of combinations (it's the NRG Mixes option on the main menu) so you can choose options ranging in length from 33 to 52 to the full 74 minutes. - posted by Vanessa on 1/7/2011
Super Fun Workout
In the Ring is a super fun, intense workout. There is a bit of a learning curve, but well worth the time and effort to learn it. The music is awesome and goes well with the choreography. My favorite combos/intervals are #3 and #4 because they flow so well. The med-ball intervals are fun and crank up the intensity. I highly recommend this workout, but only to people who have plenty of workout space. - posted by Kay on 6/3/2010
Another great workout from Amy
I really enjoyed working out to this DVD, but it is not as high impact or high intensity as some of Amy's other DVD's. Still, I got a great workout in and will use it for some of my lower impact days. - posted by Renee on 4/22/2010
Not that bad
First of all, let me say I am a huge fan of Amy's and it pains me to give a workout of hers anything less than five stars! I really enjoy the cardio sections of the workout. I thought her moves were creative and the moves were different enough to stay motivated. I really don't enjoy the first two (and even the fourth) interval section. I don't have a medicine ball so I use a dumbbell and I don't really feel like I get too much out of intervals one and two. Besides the intervals being a negative, the only other thing I don't like is the music choice. Some songs have a great beat and get me going but then it switches to a song with a really slow beat that doesn't fit with the moves. Other than that, I think the workout itself is strong and would recommend it to someone who wants to take a little time to learn the workout first and then get a great workout when it's mastered. - posted by Kate on 7/6/2009
In the Ring?
This was awful. i like Amy's step workouts and her Hi Low workouts but this one misses the mark in all directions! The workout does little more than challenge your memory. The cueing is bad and in some places it is virtually non-existent. Her form is not that great. I don't mind and in fact enjoy workouts with a learning curve but this one is not worth the time and effort. I am trading this, donating it to my local library or tosses it in the trash! - posted by Sheila on 7/3/2009
Excellent Calorie Burner!!
This is a great workout. According to my heart rate monitor, my heart rate got up and stayed up! The routine is difficult to follow on your first time through, but stick with it, you will soon get the moves down, and come to appreciate all the constant changes that Amy does. It keeps the workout from becoming boring. The reason I only gave it 4 stars is because I didn't feel the routine was very well rehearsed before filming. Mistakes by the exercisers, even Amy, was distracting. The worst one is the girl modifying (on Amy's left) she seemed lost and looked as if she wanted to be anywhere but there. I keep my eyes off her, get a great workout and love seeing just how many calories I burn with this one. - posted by Cindi on 4/17/2009
not as good
I did about a half hour of this before becoming frustrated and returning to my all time favorite - amy bento kickbox xtreme. In the ring really does not challenge you beyond flexing your brain/memory muscle (the pace stays kind of mid level). There was no moment for me where I was gasping for air (I feel that these moments are critical for challenging your body and getting results)Even with the intervals, which are supposed to really challenge you, i felt disappointed. I wish there were more vids like kickbox xtreme! (with that one, I really relish the first section -the two combos/intervals - in just 15 mins, it kills me every time!) Amy really brings it with that one. If I'm going to memorize choreography, I want it to really be worth my while...I feel like it is with KB xtreme, but not with this one. still, I will keep this one, only because I am an amy devotee. It comes in handy for lower intensity days. - posted by kendra on 4/6/2009
My New Absolute Favorite
I cannot imagine how anyone could call this workout horrible. It is by far the most fun and energizing workout I have in my collection. I have 3 dvd's by Amy and this is my new favorite. The music is great and she is so encouraging and fun. I love the choreography, it is definitely kickboxing but not just standard kickboxing. I've been doing this one about every other day or so for 7 weeks now and still look forward to doing it! I hope Amy puts out another one similar to this! - posted by Alyssa on 3/12/2009

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Premixes
X
These are alternate workouts created by the manufacturer. They use the same content as the main program (i.e. the very same video footage). But the sections are re-edited into pre-made alternative workouts that you select from a menu. These are often condensed versions of the main workout.
Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Level

Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.
