Please take a strong position against the SPAMMERS
-
Thursday, May 21, 2009 7:05 AM
Dear Collage, Yesterday and today we have spammers who have joined this wonderful forum. I urge you to take a strong position against these spammers. While I realize you can't police the forum 24/7 could you please send out a message - loud and clear - that spamming is not allowed on this website - by removing their post. We know that you (Jill) checks out the "other forum" - you can verify that GlennMartin has been playing his game all over the internet. (I see that he has now deleted his post from the Collage forum and the other forum.) Here's another one - http://www.collagevideo.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=41525 and another - http://www.collagevideo.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=41694 Next thing you know they'll try and pollute the forum with porn, as they used to do with another website.

Yup, I'll sign this "petition" as well. Those posts are super annoying. Thank you.

I'm bumping this thread also. I don't trust the links to not take Collage Forum participants to sites with viruses and spyware.... And nobody wants to hear about rats in studies. (right Slinks?)

Per your request, each of the forementioned threads (as well as glennmartin's) have been completely deleted. We firmly agree that these particular threads and the wording of these posts sully the image of this forum and its participants. However, as you mentioned, we cannot monitor the forum 24/7 - glennmartin, for example, had begun the thread at 10pm Central Standard Time, which is beyond our business hours - but we will do our best to sort out and eliminate such posts as soon as possible as they appear.

Could someone explain this "ticket" business at the top of the menu? Who is Glenn Martin? You know those people who try the videos for us? I would love to know what their favorites are--which DVDs do they rotate? In fact, I think we would like to know more about them. Our front-line defense against crappy DVDs.

Collage, how can we help you best to identify the post? I see two options, one being the "flag as inappropriate" and the other being "report abuse". Do you have to go through each thread to find if we have tagged a message? Or does your forum software have some special feature to bringing these to your attention without having to look at every post? I'm thinking the "flag" option you would probably have to just find...but the "report abuse" brings up a message box which might come to your attention more easily.

Thank you for your question. Until we get control of the Spammers, please do both, flag as inappropriate AND report abuse. We will never give up our forum!

This forum is unique in my experience. There are other blogs and forums, regarding fitness, news, politics, etc. etc., but this place is more than just another click---this is a community. And although we sometimes disagree with each other on this or that, I don't mind that at all because it is stimulating and there is a level of civility here and a shared focus that is so rare on the internet. What I REALLY mind is the spammers. I REALLY mind those that would come here without thought for anyone but themselves--- to disrupt, to promote, to dilute the quality of this oh so human and rare virtual community. Thank you Donna for initiating this thread. Thank you my FFs for being so stalwart in your desire to protect what we have here. And thank you Collage for giving us this platform, for your light touch in moderation---allowing the community to make it's own rules for the better part, and for knowing a good thing for what it is. "We will never give up our forum!"---Collage moderator. You know what I think? I think the spammers don't have a chance against this group of warrior women.

Another forum I visit uses some kind of software that basically requires an actual human response, and prevents spambots from registering at all. I don't know the technical end of things, but making that little 'are you a human' test part of the registration process seems to have totally stopped the spambots. (Weirdos and pervs are a little harder to weed out, but at least we aren't cluttered with computer generated spam.) Just thought I'd mention it, if it's something that your company hasn't yet considered. It definitely makes life easier on the forum moderators at that board (who approve all user registrations one at a time).
