(Andelyn)

 Good post.

I'm having similar issues related to exhaustion, and lack of a true set time to workout (as I have to get baby down for her nap and stay down long enough so I have the time to workout). If I wait until night the workout just doesn't get accomplished because I'm dragging.

I'm considering the new 10 minute solution workouts, although I already have most of the older ones. I could pull those out as well. And yoga is great right now (if I'm not too tired sometimes I can do that at night - just a short one).

Re:When you're exhausted, and working out seems like a bad idea, what do you do? (Rosema)

After comming off adderall in the winter, I find that my body just isn't coordinating to do the tens of videos that I used to be able to do so easily. This kills me and I look at those dvds and mentally kick myself for not having the energy or coordination. And things aren't getting better. Most days, all I can do is walk. And that's hard sometimes. Stay away from anything Jillian Michaels...don't do her, watch her, or think about her. When you're in a place like this--it's pure torture and nothing else.

Re:When you're exhausted, and working out seems like a bad idea, what do you do? Never heard of her, liked the clips I saw online.)

I did a 10 minute stretching segment from one of my '10 minute' dvd's today. It was really nice to do something that felt normal. :)

Re:When you're exhausted, and working out seems like a bad idea, what do you do? (Got Tamilee Webb's classic buns of steel (elsewhere) and the Montenegro method workouts.

Maybe somewhere along the way I can get a new rhythm going.

I do need to be careful, though, I'm pretty tired, and tend to doze off when I get still. I'm kind of assuming that means I just need rest, but OTOH, I'd hate to lose my fitness progress.

Re:When you're exhausted, and working out seems like a bad idea, what do you do? I miss being on here more than a few minutes on weekends...funny, but it's still enough to get me enabled--bought 2 belly dance workouts--another fun activity I'm thinking about possibly including in my short workout time.

Re:When you're exhausted, and working out seems like a bad idea, what do you do? (Helen from Sweden)

BunnyHop: Lots of good advice have been given by all the ladies. I've been working like crazy lately and have "only" had the time and the energy lately to do outdoor walking.
I'm glad I have, because apart from getting exercise and fresh air, walking really clears my head and makes me calmer.

Good to see you MissMofia - I've missed you! Hope you're doing OK with those long workdays - I've been in your shoes for quite some time now and I'm so releaved that my vacation starts on Tuesday. Take care!

Re:When you're exhausted, and working out seems like a bad idea, what do you do? (Lilac)

I know how it is, Bunny Hop and Miss Mofia. It's hard and discouraging when you can't find the time or energy to do your usual workouts.
I was going thru a phase recently when I couldn't find much time. I think it's important to keep working out at least a few days a week even if it's only 10-15 mins. If you quit completely I think it's harder to start up again.
My workout area is in the basement and I try to do my workouts in the mornings, but I brought some of my yoga, ab, pilates workouts upstairs to do in the living room in the evenings. If you have a little spare time, you can pop one in for a short workout without having to go into your "workout room". And those type of workouts seem to be better than cardio, heavy weight, jumping around type workouts in the evenings when you might not have much energy.

Re:When you're exhausted, and working out seems like a bad idea, what do you do? (miss_mofia)

Well, I'm in a bit of the same situation here. I started a new job in March, where I work 10-11 hours a day plus 1.5-2 hour commute. I tried getting up early for shorter workouts and it didn't last long. Evenings are also out of the question as I am tired, plus it's the only time I have with hubby and it's too tempting to just watch smth on TV together. I had to give up the forum here and the challenges, as I just don't have the time (I'm rarely on the computer during weekdays anymore). Just lurk on here on the weekends.

So I got a rebounder. Yes, it's expensive but it's the only thing right now that keeps me motivated. I keep the ipod by my bed and as soon as the alarm goes off, I listen to a couple of songs to wake me up and then go play on the rebounder. I was surprised at how it gets my heart rate up. I also can jump on it while we are watching smth for 10-20 min at night--which also keeps me from eating a heavy dinner.

It doesn't have to be a rebounder (don't know if you tried it before), but it was actually cheaper than getting a stationary bike or a treadmill, and can be stored easier (no room for smth permanent in our living room).

Re:When you're exhausted, and working out seems like a bad idea, what do you do? (BunnyHop)

Thanks for the encouragement and advice. The next few months are likely to be stressful, so I do think it's important to find a new routine.

Meditation is great, when I can remember to calm down enough to try it. (And for me, the 'make your exhales longer than your inhales' is usually enough to help me drop off to sleep. At least I can rest a bit when I do have time.)

Thanks also for the food reminder. I think I'm doing well, plenty of fresh fruit, lean protein, etc., minimal junk/ low sodium, etc., but every little bit helps.

Re:When you're exhausted, and working out seems like a bad idea, what do you do? (StepFanatic)

These are all good suggestions. According to a 1999 report from the Surgeon General (http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/sgr/summ.htm), "cardiorespiratory fitness gains are similar when physical activity occurs in several short sessions (e.g., 10 minutes) as when the same total amount and intensity of activity occurs in one longer session (e.g., 30 minutes)." That has helped me get beyond the "all or nothing" syndrome where I talk myself out of exercising on a particular day because I feel as though I don't have enough time to do a full workout, might be coming down with a cold, or any of a million other excuses. There's a good posting by mlb in the thread "Hypothyroid and a Newbie" (two postings below this When You're Exhausted... entry in this Special Situations category of this Forum) about "the 5 minute rule" that can be used to overcome inertia by forcing yourself to do 5 (or 10) minutes with no excuses after which time it often is no problem to add more time. If not, 5 minutes is better than nothing. If you're interrupted, try to do more exercise later. It all counts.

Re:When you're exhausted, and working out seems like a bad idea, what do you do? (LRM)

All the above ideas are so good!!! I vote for getting outside to walk when you can and try to get in some yoga. Those both make you feel so good! even if it's just a few minutes at a time.

LRM

Re:When you're exhausted, and working out seems like a bad idea, what do you do? (MH)

I would do feel good workouts, like Ellen's. Not only is she a positive motivator but I think she is so soothing too. I would stick with walks too. Walking is so good for you emotionally, mentally and physically. I would probably alternate between the walking and ellen's. Enough to keep you going but not too much to stress you out.

Re:When you're exhausted, and working out seems like a bad idea, what do you do?
